About the Company
Dr Meikle opened his hydropathic spa in 1868. Think clean eating, outdoor gyms and (questionable) hydrotherapy treatments – 19th century style. Could he imagine that today, Crieff Hydro would still be owned and run by his descendants? Or that guests would be zooming about on quadbikes and Segways, instead of taking ice-cold dips on nurse’s orders? Probably not.
A lot’s changed since we opened our doors, but our family bond hasn’t. Our 600-strong team is really one big extended family – including our CEO Stephen Leckie, Dr Meikle’s great-great-great-grandnephew.
For a long time the strongest drink you could get here was a double ginger beer on the rocks: we were officially a dry hotel (if you ignore sneaky hipflasks) until we opened our first bar in 1994. You wouldn’t think it now, looking at our wall of whisky and mixologists shaking up perfect cocktails.
Other things have changed too. We built our first self-catering lodges and cabins in 1998. Then we opened Action Glen in 2003, with more activities than you can shake a stick at. But we didn’t stop there, in 2006 we opened BIG Country – the home of our legendary kids’ club. In fact, it’s the largest registered childcare facility in Britain and offers inclusive childcare for 2 to 12-years olds when staying at Crieff Hydro.
The, in 2018 we were lucky enough to celebrate our 150th birthday too – with a very big cake and a wee dram of course. All told, we’ve invested £40 million in the hotel and facilities in recent years and we won’t stop there.
We’re now part of a family of seven hotels across Scotland. And like true Scots, we’ve got relatives everywhere – from our outdoorsy cousins in Glencoe, to a much-loved great aunt in Peebles.
